Endorsements

I spent decades as just a political observer but chose to support my friend Sadie Hunter because I know how hard she works for people. She does this because she has lived through challenges. She knows what to fight for. She is an awesome city councilor and will be a fantastic MLA.

Dale Bass, Sadie's colleague on city council

Sadie has a great reputation as a representative and advocate on Kamloops Council. She is an excellent Councillor. I'm happy to have her as our candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson. She is smart, sincere, authentic, energetic, and she wants to represent all British Columbians. Sadie will be an excellent MLA.

Michael Crawford, Kamloops resident

I've been impressed with Sadie's performance on Kamloops City Council and think she will make a great MLA for Kamloops

Morgan asks the Kamloops-North Thompson Candidates

Specifically to the candidates on the north side of the river, how are you going to help the Tranquille corridor and reduce crime

Sadie Hunter Answered

We solve this problem by continuing to work together and getting more people who are hurting the treatment and housing they need. We also need to continue to focus on removing the criminal elements who are taking advantage of people and supplying toxic drugs.

As a continuation of the increased support for mental health and addictions and supportive housing units already implemented, the BC NDP's future plan includes 800 new treatment beds, 10 new complex care homes and $25 million to support more front-line mental health and social service workers, which will create space for the RCMP to focus on serious crime.

How important do you think it is to have our MLA be a member of the party that forms government

Sadie Hunter Answered

Absolutely critical. Having a MLA who has a direct voice into policy and decisions being made for our region is extremely important. It's very difficult to influence decisions or champion change as a member of the opposition.

What are your plans to increase affordable housing if any?

Sadie Hunter Answered

In Kamloops, the BC NDP have invested over $9M to build affordable housing for seniors, persons with disabilities, indigenous elders & youth and people with mental health issues. We've also enhanced rental subsidy benefits for low-income families and seniors by increasing the maximum rent ceilings.

After housing prices skyrocketed under the BC Liberals, John Horgan brought in a speculation tax. Now, 11,000 previously empty condos are being used for long-term rentals. After the BC Liberals let rents increase beyond the cost of living, John capped rent hikes at inflation. Saving renters over $300 on average. When the pandemic hit, he banned evictions and stopped rent increases.

The BC NDP has made progress, but there are still a lot of people struggling. We need to keep helping them. That’s why the BC NDP is committed to extended the rent freeze until the end of 2021 and passing legislation to cap increases at inflation after that. We will also provide a renter’s rebate of $400 a year for households earning up to $80,000 a year.

These commitments will help renters get through the pandemic and put more money back in their pockets as we build an economic recovery for everyone.

Ok, so some comments by a BC Liberal were leaked and no one if debating that they were wrong. What do the Kamloops candidates have to say about it?
Follow up: What are you going to DO about it?

Sadie Hunter Answered

Hi Shawn - can you please be more specific? I'm not entirely sure what comments you're referring to.
